Allotment Rationalisation
To research, source, procure and implement a software package that would largely automate the management of 1000 allotment plots more cost effectively and reduce the cost to Slough Borough Council.
Slough Borough Council
Background & Aims
Slough managed 1000 allotment plots on 12 sites at a cost of £120k per year, excluding a .6FTE Allotment Officer. The revenue was about £25k per year and the allotment fees could not be raised to the point of cost recovery without substantially raising all other leisure service fees. It was decided to purchase & implement a technical solution.
Outcomes & Impact
The main outcome was a reduction in the cost of servicing and managing the allotments, one .6 FTE post was no longer deemed necessary.
New systems require a fundamental understanding of the existing situation.
These systems often offer new and better ways of doing things.
Systems still need to be maintained if full value/savings are to be leveraged.
