Access to Japan`s data of this topic was particularly difficult to locate. This could be due to the fact that it is a largely homogeneous society and/or the education department, as yet, do not keep detailed records on the race and native language of its school children. However, there were 1.98 million foreign residents in Japan as of March 31, accounting for 1.54 percent of the population, with 84.28 percent of them between the ages of 15 and 64, according to the latest government figures. The child population, up to 14 years old, was 8.96 percent, lower than the 13.13 percent among Japanese. So the 8.96 % of 1.98 million would indicate that there are 177,408 children under 15 who are not from a Japanese background.

CHALLENGES
UNITED KINGDOM The United Kingdom performs around the average in mathematics and reading and above average in science, compared with the 34 OECD countries that participated in the 2012 PISA assessment of 15-year-olds.
UNITED KINGDOM Students from an immigrant background (first or second generation) in the United Kingdom perform as well in mathematics as other students. This is in contrast to the situation observed in many other OECD countries, where students from an immigrant background score significantly lower.
JAPAN While the Japanese school system ensures equity in education opportunities (i.e. the relationship between students`socioeconomic status and performance is weaker than the OECD average), performance differences between advantaged and disadvantaged schools have widened since 2003.
JAPAN Whilst test performance is excellent, students` feelings towards school are less favourable. Some 68% are satisfied with school, compared with the OECD average of 78%, and only 31% believe that conditions are  ideal in their school, compared with the OECD average of 61%.
