CONCENTRATE ON THE END GOAL
There are thousands of pre-build virtual field trips out there.  Use them as your muse.  Make your field trip unique to your content, students, and resources.
Plan your virtual field trip out to include a plan B and plan C.  You never know when things will go wrong with technology. Also, run through your field trip as a student to get a good sense of the amount of time it will take to complete.
Like any other lesson or activity, students need feedback to make sure that they are on the right track.  Give them check points or self-graded mini-quizzes along the way so that they can self assess as well as bring stray students to your attention.
Like any other field trip, without direction and clear expectations, students will have a tendency to be students.  Have a series of check points, questions, or formative assessments along the way to keep students involved.  
Think about your end goal when starting your virtual field trip.  What is it you want the students to know; this is the most important part.
Working with a partner, explore some virtual field trips online.  Make a note of what you like and what you do not like. Be prepared to share.

Checking for online resources is important to the success of your virtual field trip.  Make sure your have the content and resources to make your field trip successful.
STEP #3: Choose a Program
There are many different applications that can be used to "house" your virtual field trip.  Use one that you feel comfortable with.
