Encourage students to read/learn about elections in the classroom or as homework.
Pick two books that all kids need to read (there can be a copy of each book for every classroom).
Run an election where kids vote for their favorite books (or characters in the books).
More About this Activity:
The books on which they vote can be books about elections (“Duck for President” by Doreen Cronin, “Grace for President” by Kelly DiPucchia, “Amelia Bedelia’s First Vote” by Herman Parish, are a few), but the books do not necessarily need to cover the topic of elections, as the kids will learn about elections through the voting process. This activity can involve making voter registration cards, campaign posters, and even “I voted” stickers or buttons.
Teaches students about elections and the democratic process, helps children think critically about why they like a book or a character within the book, and ties in lessons in math (tallying votes) and social studies.
