The Dodgers were founded in 1883 as the Brooklyn Atlantics. The Atlantics endured several name changes before settling on the Dodgers. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles due to the fact that the stadium in Brooklyn was run down and New York politicians refused to let owner Walter O'Malley build a new one.
Jackie Robinson made his Major League debut on April 15, 1947. He won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award in 1947. The award is now called the Jackie Robinson Award in his honor. He was the first African-American to be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962.
