Military Presence
The Padres were established in 1969 as a part of a Major League Baseball expansion. The Padres and the Angels are the only two California teams to begin in California. The Giants and Dodgers originated in New York while the Athletics began in Philadelphia.
In 1996 the Padres became the first national sports team to have an annual military appreciation event. They wear camouflage uniforms every Sunday and often host Marine recruits at games.

Padres refer to the Spanish word for "fathers." The team chose this name after the Spanish Franciscan fathers who founded San Diego in 1769.
