Make a dictionary by putting together several sheets of paper for a booklet.
Ask children to write at the top of each page a new word he or she has recently learned.
If the words can be shown in pictures, have the children look through magazines and newspapers to find pictures that illustrate the words and paste them on the corresponding pages.
Instruct children to write the definition of each word on the correct page, and to include a sentence using each new word. Some or all of the sentences can be used as the basis for a creative story.
When children act out a good poem or story they learn to love its rhyme, rhythm and the pictures it paints with a few well-chosen words. They grow as readers by connecting feelings with the written word.
