The Phillie Phanatic was created with the help from Harrison/Erickson of New York City (now known as Acme Mascots); the company had ties with The Muppets and the team's marketing and promotions departments. The Phillie Phanatic debuted on April 25, 1978 in a show about Noah's Ark for the children. The Phanatic is known for his antics and is often considered one of the best mascots in all of professional sports.
They are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional American sports. The team was founded in 1883 by sporting goods manufacturer Al Reach and attorney John Rogers after they were awarded an expansion franchise. The team was one of the "Classic Eight" teams in the National League.
