Research funded by the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) shows doctors how to help Americans behave in healthier ways—like by exercising or eating better. This reduces individuals’ risk of chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes. It also decreases healthcare costs—treating preventable chronic diseases accounts for 86% of all healthcare spending.
