Newark, Delaware 2017 Bike-to-Work Day & Challenge
The Institute for Public Administration (IPA) at the University of Delaware (UD) conducted applied research to explore the use of participatory planning processes that incorporate community-driven, or “crowdsourced” data data to supplement traditional active transportation collection methods.   “Event-centric crowdsourcing” was tested as a means to engage, disseminate, and collect information from bicyclists during May 2017, in conjuction with Newark Bike-to-Work Day.
Newark Bike-to-Work Day Event
BikeNewark organized the local National Bike-to Work-Day event on May 19, 2017, in partnership with the City of Newark, UD, Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), and the Newark Bike Project. Bicycle commuters rode in teams with captain-led “bike trains” that departed from six locations and culminated with a celebration at UD's Mentors' Circle. The event drew attention to bicycling as clean transportation, a healthy lifestyle choice, and source of economic development. The 2017 event included a team “challenge” through Motivate the First State, a campaign designed to inspire Delawareans to get active and make their activities count toward charity. Participants were encouraged to download and use the Plus3 Fitness App to compete with other teams for points. IPA, in collaboration with DelDOT, tested the App as a source of “crowdsourced” data for active transportation planning in Delaware.
