SAVING WILDLIFE

TRANSMITTING KNOWLEDGE

HELPING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

In 2000, Willie Smits a trained forester, a microbiologist, conservationist, animal rights activist, wilderness engineer and social entrepreneur used all those skills to create an environmental organisation to protect the planet: Masarang

It spread to Hong Kong, the Nederlands, Austria... the main center is in Indonesia.

Masarang has four objectives: reforestation, saving endangered animal species and biodiversity, support for local culture and activities, environmental education and study scholarship.

This is what Adrienne Watson came to tell us about.

Masarang's actions

VOLUNTEER WORK IN TASIKOKI WITH FIS

Our school, the French International School of Hong Kong, has been working with Masarang for several years. The Ecology and Territory class go on a trip every year, as volunteers for the Tasikoki Animal Rescue Center.

Volunteers take care of animals, hike in nature, plant trees, clean beaches and do many other activities to help the center and learn about sustainable development.

animals and biodiversity

suwalesi and borneo: Masarang teaches agroforestry, an ecological farming system to preserve the forest

forest is destroyed for palm oil

improves economic, environmental and social value of the forest

turtles, as many other species, need protection from pollution, deforestation, illegal trade and others or they risk extinction

Masarang has many projects around this issue, such as  a turtle hatchery in Tulap

deforestation  and illegal trade is causing loss of biodiversity for animals and plants

Watson described a factory built in tasikoki

an important part of helping the Earth is making it work with local populations

this factory is now an important source of income, that allows locals to make use of natural ressources

raising awareness can bring more people to masarang's cause

Masarang provides an educational program about nature and the environment

Masarang funds scholarships, gives free English classes to enable better education for poor families

Adrienne Watson, founder and chairleader of Masarang HK and Willie Smits' wife, exceptionally came to our school to present about Masarang, the Tasikoki Rescue Center, the Sintang Orangutang Center, the Tulap Turtle Beach, ...

PALM SUGAR

Palm sugar is a representative part of Masarang's projects. They use it to support local economy.

Last year's FIS students, as we plan to redo this year, bought and resold sugar made in Tasikoki's factory to fund the trip. Watson brought a sample(paid for, of course) for us to taste.
