Remember,  your knees must be straight to stretch the whole muscle group. The two larger (Gastrocnemius) muscles on the surface of the calf are both inserted above the knee. 
If your knee is bent they are not stretched.

The Soleus muscle completes the calf. It inserts below the knee –it benefits even if 
the knee is bent.
