South Portland High School Learning Commons
2017-2018
Year In Review
THE PLACE TO BE
537 classes visited the Learning Commons this year. FIVE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SEVEN! Yeah, this is a pretty popular place.
WHAT'S IN A GUIDE?
The Learning Commons has finally installed an "art wall" which displayed student worked during the SPHS Art Show. Next year, the space will feature quarterly work!
L
KING AHEAD
Mr. Brough and Ms. Gartley (of Mahoney) will continue to collaborate on multi-school research guides in order to provide students and staff with current resources on important topics.
The LC will continue to look for new and exciting ways to engage students in free reading, 21st Century Skills, and the value of academic research over web searching.
Last year, visits to project-specific research guides hit 5,000. This year, 12,000+!  That is like a million percent increase. Or maybe it is closer to 140%. Still, not too shabby!
BOOKS ARE NOT DEAD
After a modest increase in circulation last year, the Learning Commons is looking at a nearly 10% rise in checked-out books this school year.
WHAT'S IN A GUIDE?
Mr. Brough visited all Freshmen and Sophomore English classes to talk about evaluating online resources, using databases, and the importance of citing your sources.
Visits to a variety of Maine school libraries are on the docket next year with the hopes of meeting other librarians and generating ideas to implement in the SPHS Learning Commons.
