Alexander has a new book fair vendor! For the next two years, your Alexander library will host Follett Book Fairs. Although some things will be different, some things will stay the same, too! Alexander staff will continue to receive their 20% discount on all purchases.  However, we do anticipate having a larger selection of more current titles at affordable prices. Come see us and take a look!

Did You Know?

myOn is back!

Teachers and students now have access to thousands of digital books via AliefHUB! (powered by Classlink) through myOn! On the first login, students will complete an assessment to determine their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) which serves to inform their suggested reading selections. myON is a great way to engage students with authentic texts. According to Dr. Stephen Krashen,

"...those who do more recreational reading show better development in reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary" (http://www.sdkrashen.com/content/articles/singapore.pdf).

Meet Yasmin!

Author Saadia Faruqi visited Alexander Tuesday, November 13, to visit with our 1st and 2nd grade students. Ms. Faruqi is the author of the Yasmin series. Yasmin is a spirited second grade student from a Pakistani family with many interests including art, fashion, exploring, and more! The Yasmin books are a great way for young readers to step into chapter books. The chapters are short and readers are supported with illustrations. In addition, Yasmin books include nonfiction text features such as a glossary. Come check them out!

We Got Funded!

Our Project Lit Donors Choose grant was funded! We have received copies of Refugee, The First Rule of Punk, and Amina's Voice to start our Project Lit Chapter. Project Lit is a book club with a difference. In addition to sharing a great read, we will complete a service project with the goal of encouraging others to read, too! Do you know a 3rd or 4th grade student who loves to read and make a difference? Invite them to join our Project Lit Book Club! Staff members are welcome to join, too!

Are You Ready to Rumble?

Battle of the Books has begun! To qualify, students in grades 3 and 4 must come down to the library and read the qualifying picture books. On Friday, December 7, students will take the qualifying quiz. The top 10 scorers from each grade will be invited to join a Battle of the Books team!

Teams will read and discuss the selections until battles occur in late March.
