The first prototype of the internet was made in the late 1960s. It was created with ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.) It was used to communicate with multiple computers on a single network. and was originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Good, the Bad and The Growth of the Internet.
The internet has grown so much it has become a part of almost everyones livelihoods. We use the internet for almost everything. We use it to communicate, we use it for information and we use it for our entertainment among other things. Internet has become an important part of most peoples lives to the point most people wouldn't know how to function without it. The internet can be good and also be bad for us as a society.
In 1995 less than 1% of the world population had access to the internet. Today more than 40% of the world has access to the internet.
Growth of Internet Users
The Good
Communication: The internet allows you to communicate with anyone no matter the distance. Skype has connected over 300 million people around the world. You can also text or use social media to communicate.
Learning: The internet can increase graduation rates. Students with internet at home are 6-8% more likely to graduate compared to someone without it. Also in online courses has increased by 96% in the last 5 years. Also easy to find information on anything your interested in. Ex. if you want to be a teacher you can do research on what it takes to be a teacher.
Economy: The internet o pens job opportunities and revenue for online businesses. The internet has contributed 3.4% to GDP in 13 countries.
Health: 1 in 6 teens use the internet to find information about drugs, sexual health and depression. The internet can also help people make more informed health decisions.
The Bad
Pornography: Its easier for children to find adult sites with little restrictions on the internet.
Communication: The internet is effecting peoples social skills. Most people are struggling with face to face communication.
Addiction: 5-10% of the internet users are addicted. 1 in 3 people consider the internet to be as important as food, water and shelter.
Health: Internet usage causes eye strain, the percentage of adults needing glasses grew from 25% to 41.6%. It also causes bad posture, reading for long periods of time leads to hunching over which causes bad posture. It also causes sleep deprivation. Some people spend 8 hours a day staring at a computer screen and average 6 hours of sleep.
Bullying: There has been a lot of cases of cyberbullying. 1 in 10 parents say their child has been cyberbullied. Kids who are bullied are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide
