Will banning immigrants improve United States' national security?

Michaela Tinana

Trump's Travel Ban Expansion

President Donald Trump has recently expanded his travel ban to six new countries. The Trump administration has argued that this was a required action to improve national security and legal immigration. Many were outraged by the initial ban and the expansion claiming that it is targeted toward Muslim and African immigrants, and that it is an act of xenophobia.

So, the question becomes :

Will banning immigrants truly improve the US national security?

Immigration and Crime

The Trump administration’s first year of immigration policy has relied on claims that immigrants bring crime into America. Immigrant populations in the United States have been growing fast for decades now.

In general, data suggests either that immigration has the effect of reducing average crime, or that there is simply no relationship between the two, and that areas where both grew were instances of coincidence, not cause and effect.

Socially disadvantaged neighborhoods may, however, make immigrant groups more susceptible to crime victimization when social support networks do not exist or are lacking
