DC SOCIAL INNOVATION PROJECT
We provide authentic partnership to early-stage, bootstrapped entrepreneurs working to shift DC communities from survival mode to success mode. We connect our grantees to pro-bono expertise, transformative partnerships, and resources to give them a running head start in the tough startup stage.
FoodForLife dishes out dinners and dreams. We invested in chef Marisa Stubbs to launch this venture recently recognized by CNN Money as one of the top startups in DC tackling poverty. Student-made dinners provide revenue to the nonprofit and confidence for opportunity youth (18-23). 70% of Marisa’s students find jobs within 3 months of graduating.
In 2013, we helped DC UrbanGreens break ground in Ward 7 to create a unique hyper-local farm. They are now growing and selling food year round exclusively to communities that need it, stocking corner markets east of the Anacostia River with fresh, healthy food, and have tripled the size of farming operations.
Press Pass Mentors pairs low-income high school students with journalists who provide mentoring, college preparation, and on-the-beat exposure from NBA locker rooms to the White House. Since our initial investment, 100% of their students have been accepted into college and the program’s participation rates have exploded.
