Learn about Leigh's Girls Who Code Club

The main goal of the Girls Organization is to work towards closing the gender gap in technology and changing the image of what a programmer looks like and does. STEM, especially software engineering, is mainly a male-dominated field. So we strive to inspire and encourage more people new to CS to start learning how to code. Here at the Leigh GWC Club, we do so by providing a comfortable and judgement-free environment for them, as well as a platform for slightly more experienced programmers to showcase their skills with creating projects.

Throughout last and this semester, what has the Girls Who Code worked on and accomplished?

We’ve spent the year working lessons on CodeHS, introducing the main topics of coding in a language called Python to our club members. The course is actually made for an AP Computer Science Principles class, but we customize our pace to our members and their prior knowledge.

"Girls Who Code is all about encouraging girls to pursue their interests in becoming future software engineers."

-LHS GWC Club President Liza George, Grade 12

What is the importance of having a Girls Who Code club at Leigh, as well as similar groups nation-wide?

Girls Who Code encourages girls to impact their community in a positive way through code. It is aware of the social issues that technology has the power to solve, and also of the gender inequality within the tech industry itself. So its main significance is the fact that it can inspire more female interest in STEM-related fields.
