12 Tips for Online Video Conferencing

2021

EJS Instructional Design

1. Prep your surroundings

Before attending the meeting, double check your surroundings.

Take a minute to look around and organize your area or move anything that you don't want shown on the screen. Make sure you're in a quiet location with minimal distractions.

2. Camera on

Check your settings and make sure your camera is on. No one wants to conference with a black screen, and if you're interviewing it's even more pertinent.

Wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in, and you'll feel great!

Now's the time to check the lighting! With your camera on, see how bright or dark your setup comes across before joining the meeting.

4. Tech Check

  • Make sure to do a test run before the meeting begins.

  • Test your audio and video settings.

  • Have the screen angled correctly.

5. Dress to (comfortably) impress

  • Pick an outfit out prior to the meeting starting.

  • Even though you're not in person, it's important to appear professional.

6. Avoid eating during a meeting

7. Remain muted if not speaking

8. Be aware of your actions

Try making time before the conference to eat, otherwise wait until afterwards.

Keep your mic muted if you aren't speaking--this will minimize any interruptions and keep the meeting moving smoothly.

Be mindful of what you're doing--everyone can see you!

9. Be organized

Create and share an agenda beforehand so that the conversation is timely and covers as much as possible.

10. Roll with the bumps

Sometimes things go wrong (we've all been there). Just be patient and wait for the situation to be resolved--it may feel like a while, but is normally only a minute or two to fix.

Do not leave the meeting until the host dismisses everyone. It's usually an easy cue to pick up, and you won't look like you're rushing to get out of there or miss anything important.

11. Wait until host dismisses everyone before leaving

Don't forget to say a quick thank you! It's more important than you might think.

12. Thank the host before logging off
