This acronym is often expanding to include additional identities (such as asexual, pansexual, genderqueer, etc), so the "+" is sometimes used to acknowledge those. Terms are ever-evolving and ever-changing; it is not important to know the meaning of every single term, but instead know that you can always Google it! Here is a place to start: http://community.pflag.org/glossary Sometimes confused, it is important to recognize the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
Refers to an individual's physical and/or emotional attraction to the same and/or opposite gender. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual and straight are all examples of sexual orientations. Refers to a person's innate, deeply felt psychological identification as a man, woman or some other gender, which may or may not correspond to the sex assigned to them at birth. Refers to all of the external characteristics and behaviors that are socially defined as either masculine or feminine, such as dress, grooming, mannerisms, speech patterns and social interactions.
