How to Write Compound Formulas from Names:
Step 1:
What type of elements are present?
Metals are on the left and nonmetals are on the right of the periodic table.
left + right metal + nonmetal
right + right nonmetal + nonmetal
transition metal + nonmetal
metal + polyatomic ion
ionic compound
charges of ions in each group 1 = 1+   2 = 2+   13 = 3+   15 = 3-    16 = 2-    17 = 1-
balancing charges of ions to make ionic compounds neutral
polyatomic anions suffixes:       -ate       -ite (BFF 2.0)
transition metals (roman numeral tells you the charge amount)
copy formula (with charge) from BFF 2.0. Balance charges
Write the + charge amount and balance charges.
no ions present (no charges) prefixes tell you the number of each atom's subscript
prefixes: 1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta 6 = hexa 7 = hepta 8 = octa 9 = nona 10 = deca
covalent compound
